19-run Fourth Inning Propels Ursinus over Baseball Team, 25-14

Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior Elliott Freeman's (Bangor, Pa.) opposite-field grand slam in the first inning was quickly overshadowed after Ursinus College scored 19 runs in the fourth inning to overcome a 12-run deficit, after being held scoreless after the first three innings, and win a 25-14 decision over the Arcadia University baseball team Wednesday afternoon. The game was called after six full innings due to darkness. With the loss, Arcadia drops to 7-23-1 overall, while Ursinus improves to 15-15.

Freeman finished the day a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with the grand slam, two doubles, and a single and drove in five runs to go along with two runs scored.

Freshman Jordan Draude (Lancaster, Pa.) also chipped in with three base hits on the day with a run scored, while junior Tom Wagner (Somerdale, N.J.) and freshman Justin Chasmar (Barnegat, N.J.) each had two hits with a combined four RBI and five runs scored.

After senior starting pitcher David Behler (Lehighton, Pa.) retired the side in order to start off the game, the Knights got on the board first in the bottom half of the first after Freeman blasted a mistake from freshman Louis Aikins (Rumson, NJ) over the right field fence for a grand slam to score Wagner, Chasmar and junior Andonis Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J.).

In the third, Arcadia added eight more runs to increase the lead to 12. Yiantsos led off the inning for the Knights with a bunt single to third base and Freeman drove him home after a double to right center tacked on his fifth RBI of the game.

Sophomore Michael Nessel (Stuart, Fla.), senior Taylor Schon (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Wagner each contributed a run-scoring single in the frame and Chasmar lined a bases-loaded triple down the right field line to clear the bases. Chasmar then proceeded to score because of a wild pitch, which brought the Knights' lead to 12.

The Bears quickly responded to the eight-run third inning by the Knights with a 19-run inning of their own in the very next half. Ursinus led off the inning by reaching base on a fielding error and from there, the Bears exploded for the 19 runs on 13 hits, three hit by pitches, three walks, and two errors.

Sophomore Christopher Jablonski (Galloway, N.J.) recorded a sacrifice fly in the fourth for Ursinus, which would have been the third out of the inning but because of the two errors, got up to the plate again and hit a grand slam of his own to drive in his fifth RBI of the inning.

Arcadia had a chance in the next half to put a couple of runs across, but ended up stranding runners on second and third to end the inning.

Both teams put up multiple runs in the fifth inning after Ursinus added six and Arcadia got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning. Nessel drew a bases loaded walk to score Chasmar and sophomore Connor Arsenault (Medford, N.J.) hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to plate Yiantsos.

The game was called due to darkness after the sixth inning was completed with Ursinus leading 25-14.

Behler started on the hill for the Knights and threw three shutout innings, only allowing one hit and a walk, while striking out five in the no-decision. Senior Jay Zehring (Manassas, Va.) suffered the loss for the Knights after surrendering eight runs (none earned) in one out of relief.

For the Bears, freshman Connor Moriarty (Mahwah, N.J.) gave up four runs on four this and a walk, but was credited with the win after being the pitcher of record when Ursinus took the lead.

The Knights will next take on Alvernia University on the road on Friday at 3:30 p.m. to start their last three game conference series of the season.
