GLENSIDE, Pa. – The fourth-seeded Arcadia University women's lacrosse team advanced to the semifinal round of the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Mid-Atlantic Championship Tournament with a 14-11 quarterfinal victory over fifth-seeded Drew University Wednesday afternoon at Easton Field.
The Knights (13-7), who are making their first-ever ECAC tournament appearance, will face the winner of tonight's quarterfinal between top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology and eighth-seeded Neumann University Saturday at 12 p.m. in Hoboken, New Jersey.
The Rangers (9-7) opened the game with a three-goal run to jump out to an early lead, which included free position goals from senior Nikki Kleiman and sophomore Theresa Shafron and was capped off by senior Krysta Cento's tally 10 minutes into the contest. Senior
Haylee Molloy got Arcadia on the board follow a Knights timeout, and the two teams traded goals from there over the next nine minutes of the game.
Cento's second goal of the game gave Drew a 6-3 lead with 8:36 left in the first half before Molloy started a three-goal Arcadia run that tied the game at 6-6 at the break. Molloy's tally was followed by a pair of goals from freshman
Nicole Hutson in the final minute of the opening frame.
Sophomore
Jessica Santoli gave the Knights their first lead of the game 2:30 into the second half, but Kleiman had a quick answer for the Rangers, tying the game back up just 29 seconds later. Sophomore
Erin Misner gave Arcadia the lead for good three minutes later, which started a four-goal surge that gave the Knights control of the game.
Junior
Dawn Faranetta capped that run with a free position goal with 17:39 left in the game to give Arcadia an 11-7 advantage, and later capped the scoring for the Knights with another free position marker to put them up 14-10 with 5:15 to go.
Freshman Maddie Spiess brought Drew back within three with 4:02 left on the clock, but Misner picked up the draw control that followed and Arcadia was able to maintain possession for the vast majority of the closing minutes of the game to secure the win.
Hutson totaled a game-high five goals for the Knights, while Molloy found the back of the net three times, raising her program-record goals total to 236 and her career-record points total to 304.
Freshman
Liz Stierle won her first career start in goal for Arcadia, totaling a season-high 13 saves to improve her record to 2-0 for the year. She and the rest of the Knights' defensive unit were much improved following a slow start, as Arcadia caused 12 turnovers, all but one of which came after going down 6-3.
Junior
Kathleen Finnegan, freshman
Courtney Capehart, Misner and Stierle had two caused turnovers each in the game, while seniors
Catherine Brown and
Dana Roessler once again put in strong all-around performances to lead help lead the Knights to the come-from-behind win.
Kleiman finished with four goals and a game-high four assists for a game-high seven points to lead the Rangers, while Cento and Spiess added two goals each. Sophomore Gianna Minogue finished with 10 saves as her record fell to 9-7 for the year.
