Field Hockey Clinches Playoff Berth with 5-0 Rout of Albright on Senior Day

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University field hockey team scored five unanswered goals, all in the second half, on its way to a 5-0 MAC Commonwealth victory over visiting Albright College Saturday. The Knights (6-12) improved to 4-2 in conference play with the win, and clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament. The Lions fell to 11-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Freshman Sydney Cyr scored the only goal the Knights would need 6:23 into the second half, firing a shot from the top off the circle into the back of the cage off a corner inserted by classmate Isabelle Houser for the first goal of her collegiate career. Senior Allie Hines extended the lead to 2-0 as she forced her way to the front of the cage and put the ball in off the keeper and inside the left post for her team-leading 10th goal of the year in the 56th-minute.

Albright called a timeout after Hines' goal, but Arcadia kept the momentum as Cyr scored again off a corner insert from Houser 1:04 later. Sophomore Nicole Hassett scored on a penalty stroke in the 64th-minute, her second in as many games, and fellow sophomore Gabby Sedares capped the scoring with 1:24 left in the match off a feed from senior Laura Squicciarini.

IN GOAL: Senior Brittany Hodson was outstanding in goal, totaling 17 saves as she registered her first shutout victory of the season. Aileen Taylor made just two stops while taking the loss in goal for Albright.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Albright failed to score in the opening half despite outshooting Arcadia 16-2 and having an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners. The Lions had a slimmer 12-10 edge in shots and 10-9 margin in penalty corners in the second half.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: The Knights will be making their fourth MAC Commonwealth tournament berth in five years, and will travel to second-seeded Alvernia University for a semifinal round match November 2 at a time to be determined. Arcadia will look to avenge its September 24 regular season loss to the Crusaders in Reading.
