GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's lacrosse team won its second straight overtime game in a row Tuesday afternoon with an 8-7 decision over Misericordia at Easton Field. Sophomore
Allegra Benites scored her second straight overtime, game-winner on a free position tally with 45 seconds to go in the second overtime period. The win moves the Knights to 3-1 on the young season, while Misericordia falls to 1-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Neither team led by more than two goals in the game, which saw Misericordia up by one after Erin Baker's tally 14:04 into the second half. Benites tied the game four minutes later with her second goal of the game, and sophomore
Marie Brockman gave the Knights a 7-6 lead after netting her second goal of the game with 4:12 remaining in regulation.
Arcadia had position of the ball and looked to run out the clock, but Katie McLaughlin came up with a huge save on sophomore
Courtney Capehart's shot with 1:29 remaining, and a after a successful clear the Cougars went on the man-advantage after sophomore
Sarah Obuchowski was given a yellow card with 1:03 left in the second half. That play also resulted in a free position attempt for Allie Elmes, who converted to tie the game with 1:01 left in the period. Brianna Ladner was able to grab the draw that followed, but the Cougars were unable to get a shot off in the final minute thanks to a strong defensive stand for Arcadia.
Neither team, was able to score in the first three-minute overtime session, setting the stage for Benites in the second OT. She was fouled by Elmes and awarded a free position attempt in the final minute, and buried the game-winner in the right side of the cage with 45 seconds left on the clock.
IN GOAL: Senior
Jordyn Dunacusky totaled eight saves and stepped out of her cage to record a key caused turnover in the closing seconds of the first overtime frame. Her record now stands at 3-1 this season. McLoughlin also had a strong game in net for Misericordia, totaling 11 saves in the match.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Benites had game-high totals of three goals and four draw controls to go with a pair of caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Brockman finished with two goals, two assists, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior
Dawn Faranetta had a game-high four assists and also had two caused turnovers.
MISERICORDIA LEADERS: Elmes also totaled a game-high three goals in the game while picking up five ground balls, while Baker finished with two goals in the game. Elmes was 2 for 2 on free position attempts, while the rest of the team was 1 for 4.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: This was a very even matchup, with which saw both teams take 23 shots and win nine draw controls in the game, and a narrow 21-10 advantage in ground balls for Arcadia. Misericordia was 3 for 6 on its free position attempts, while the Knights were 2 for 4, both of which were scored by Benites.
