Baseball Team Walks Off with 6-5 Game-One Victory over Widener

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Arcadia University baseball team plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to record a 6-5 MAC Commonwealth victory over visiting Widener University Thursday afternoon at Erny Field. The Knights improved to 11-6-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the win, while the Pride fell to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in league action. The three-game conference series will conclude with Saturday's doubleheader at Widener.

SENIOIR DAY: Today was Senior Day for Arcadia, which honored Connor Arsenault, Jason Goldberg, Michael Nessel, George Pagan, Nick Todero and Steven Zellers in a ceremony prior to the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights never led in the game until the final inning, twice rallying from a two-run deficit heading into the final frame. Widener went ahead 5-4 with a run in the top of the ninth; Stephen DeBellis was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and later scored from second on Michael Elfreth's two-out RBI single up the middle.

Arcadia quickly loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the frame, with senior Steven Zellers leading off with an infield single that was followed by a bunt single from sophomore Drew Coisson and a hit by pitch for freshman Bryan Gillen. Senior Nick Todero drove in Zellers while reaching on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 5-5, and junior Jordan Draude followed with an RBI-single to center that sent home Coisson with the game-winning run.

ON TE HILL: Senior Joseph Warren picked up the win after allowing one run and one hit while striking out seven over his 4.1 innings of relief work, improving his record to a perfect 3-0 this season. Sophomore Mike Boulanger got the start for Arcadia, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts over the first 4.2 innings of the game. Michael Elfreth fell to 0-1 after giving up both runs in the ninth. Starter Kyle McKelvy didn't factor in the decfision after giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits with five Ks in his five innings of work.

ARCADIA: AT BAT: Junior Justin Chasmar was 1 for 2 in the game with a two-run homer to right in the fourth that tied the game at 2-2. It was his third long ball of the season. Draude was 2 for 5 with two RBI and a run scored in the game, while both Gillen and Zellers were 2 for 4 with a run scored.

WIDENER AT BAT: Elfreth was 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Bob Barnett was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and another driven in. Kyle Lowery was 0-2 at the plate with two RBI on a pair of sac flies.  The Pride totaled nine hits in the game, all singles.
