GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's basketball team jumped out to a 22-14 lead after the first quarter and led 44-32 at the half on its way to a 68-54 MAC Commonwealth victory over visiting Hood College Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.
FOR THE RECORD: The Knights improved their record to 6-8 overall and 3-2 in MAC Commonwealth play with their second win in as many tries. The Blazers are also 6-8 for the season and fell to 1-4 on conference play following their third straight loss.
MILESTONE WATCH: With her game-high 23 points, senior
Maureen Fiocca closed to within 11 points of becoming just the fourth known 1,000-point scorer in the history of Arcadia's women's basketball program. Her 989 career points are now fourth-most in program history as she moved past Kim Milligan's 968 career points scored from 2006-10.11 points would also tie Fiocca with former teammate
Valerie DiMuro for third on the program's career scoring list. DiMuro scored exactly 1,000 points from 2012-16.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The two teams traded buckets to open the game before senior
Imani Alston converted a layup that put that Knights out in front for good 3:25 into the contest, and in doing so started a nine-point run that was capped by a layup by Fiocca less than two minutes later. Both teams scored 18 points through eight minutes of play in the second quarter before layups from Fiocca and Alston closed out the frame, giving Arcadia a 44-32 halftime lead.
Hood held the Knights scoreless over a four minute span in the third quarter, which allowed the Blazers to go on a 13-0 run that brought them within four at 49-45 following Denisha Robinson's jumper with 2:09 left. Sophomore
Camille Menns halted the run with a layup on the following possession, and Fiocca capped the scoring in the period by hitting a layup as she was fouled and converted the free throw that followed to push the Knights lead back to nine heading into the fourth quarter, 54-45.
Arcadia put the game away with a 10-2 run to open in the final frame, opening a 64-47 advantage on its way to the 68-54 final. Fiocca started that run with a layup in the opening minute, and Menns capped it off with a layup of her own following a Celestria Hill turnover with 3:42 to go.
ARCADIA LEADERS: Fiocca converted 10 of her 21 attempts from the field and was 3 of 4 at the line to claim her game-high 23 points, and grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Alston scored 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field to go with four rebounds, four assists and three steals, while sophomore
Olivia Roseman added 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting from the field that saw her hit each of her three attempts from beyond the arc.
HOOD LEADERS: Taylor McGaughey was the lone Blazer to score in double figures, pouring in 17 points on 6 of 18 shooting from the field that saw her go 5 of 15 from three-point range. Deaja Colden just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 boards. Robinson also finished with eight points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Arcadia shot 46 percent (29-63) from the field and was 4 of 8 from three, while Hood shot 40 percent (23-57) from the floor and was a far-less efficient 6 of 23 from beyond the arc. The Knights held a 34-22 advantage in the paint while outscoring Hood 22-6 off turnovers and 14-5 in second-chance scoring.
