FREDERICK, Md. - The Arcadia University women's lacrosse team battled back from a second-half deficit to take Hood to double-overtime in its season-opener Saturday, but the Knights came up just short in a hard-fought, 10-9 defeat.
Hannah McAllister,
Alex Arena, and
Sarah Morris led Arcadia with two goals each in the effort while Arena's four points tied for the game-high.
Emily Griffith made 13 saves in her first career start in goal for the Knights.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Hood jumped out to an early advantage with two scores in the first four minutes, but
Giovanna Raspanti cut the Knight deficit in half shortly after with her first goal of the season with an assist from
Skylar Acker. After the Blazers responded to regain a two-goal lead,
Hannah McAllister and
Alex Arena both found the back of the net to even the score at three-all at the midway point of the opening half.
-With just under seven minutes remaining in the first half,
Maddie Ruger netted her first career goal to get the Knights back within one, but Hood answered before the end of the half to take a 6-4 lead into the break.
-The Knights got out to a fast start offensively to begin the second half to tie the game at six with
Sarah Morris' first career goal followed by a free position score from McAllister all within the first four minutes. Hood answered to regain a one-goal advantage, but the three-straight scores from Acker, Morris, and Arena gave the Knights their first lead of the afternoon, 9-7, with ten minutes remaining in regulation. However, the Blazers battled back with two-straight scores to send the game to overtime.
-The two sides weren't able to net the game-winner in the first overtime period as
Emily Griffith came up with a huge save on a Blazer free position shot to send the game to a second overtime period. With 1:52 remaining in the second overtime, Hood's Laura Skorobatsch netted the game-winner to lift the Blazers to the 10-9 victory.
