Knights Split a Pair at Albright

Reading, Pa., Sunday, April 10, 2011-- Arcadia University picked up their first Commonwealth Conference win in 2011 this afternoon in the opening game of their three-game series against Albright College. The Knights jumped all over the Lions of Albright taking the opener 14-5, before falling in the second game 8-7. Senior Jason Heryla picked up his first win of the season throwing seven strong innings.

Arcadia fell behind 2-1 after the first inning, however used two straight four run innings to break the game open. Heryla helped himself out delivering a one-out single to get the second inning started. He would then advance to second on a single by Nick Petroski, and a bunt single by Patrick Kwiatowski would load the bases for the Knights with only one down. The Knights would go on to manufacture four runs without a single hit to push the lead to 5-2.

After a 1-2-3 bottom of the second, Kyle Jackson would lead off the top of the third, hammering a home run to straight away center field, and opening the flood gates for the Knights. After an out, first-year Jay Zehring singled to left field, and Heryla reached base on an error, putting two on with only one out. Petroski would be next to step into the batters box and took full advantage of the runners aboard, hitting the ball over the left center wall for a 3-run homer and a 9-2 Arcadia advantage.

This would be all the runs the Knights would need however they would score another in the top of the fourth and post yet another four spot in the seventh to win 14-5.

Heryla went seven strong innings for the complete game victory giving up five runs, four earned on 10 hits, while striking out three and walking four.

The second game of the double-header Albright jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and looked to hold on for the victory. However the Knights were not about to go quietly, answering with two runs in the top of the second and another in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 4-3. Albright would score one in the bottom of the fourth to extend their advantage to 5-3 through four.

After a scoreless fifth, the Knights would strike in the top of the sixth inning, putting up three runs and taking a 6-5 lead. The big hit of the inning came off the bat of Mark Bowman as he sent the Lions pitch over the left field wall for a three-run homer and third homer of the day for the Knights. Arcadia would go on to add a run in the top of the seventh inning to increase the lead to 7-5, heading into the bottom of the seventh and final inning of regulation.

Arcadia looking for it's first double-header sweep on the season, needed three outs, however a couple errors by the Knight defense allowed Albright to put runners in scoring position without recording an out giving the Lions just the opening they needed. The very next batter would send a bases clearing, game winning homer over the left field wall for the walk off victory.

The two teams will complete their three game series  to determine the winner of the serieson Tuesday at Erny Field at 4 p.m. Arcadia with their victory in the opener improves to 2-19 on the season and 1-10 in Commonwealth play.
