Arcadia's Version of the Cardiac Kids Wins Second Straight Game in Final At-Bat

Box Score Elizabethtown, PA (March 24, 2013) - Brandon Martin's RBI infield single in the top of the seventh gave the "Cardiac Kids", AKA the Arcadia University Knights (11-6-1, 4-1 MCOM) a 6-5 lead that they would turn in a 9-6 win over the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays (6-12, 2-3). The Knights trailed 5-0 going to the seventh, but scored nine runs on four hits to complete the amazing comeback. This was the second straight game that the Knights rallied to win in their last at bat.

The game was a quiet pitcher's duel until the bottom of the sixth, when the Blue Jays plated five runs and headed to the seventh with a 5-0 lead. The Knights, who had just four hits through the first sixth innings came alive in the seventh.

Elliott Freeman started the inning off by getting hit by a pitch. Brandon Martin then doubled and Jay Zehring was hit by a pitch too load the bases. Taylor Schon then reached on an error, scoring Freeman. Connor Arsenault then shot one down the left field line to score two and cut the deficit to 5-3. After a pitching change, George Pagan singled to once again load the bases. Nick Petroski drew an RBI walk to make the score 5-4.

Justin Simpson then hit a ground ball to shortstop that scored Aresenault and tied the game at five. Freeman, then batting for a second time walked to load the bases with two outs. Martin then got his second hit of the inning, and RBI infield hit to put the Knights ahead 6-5. Zehring walked for the second time in the inning to pad the lead to 7-5. Schon then gave the Knights some added insurance, reaching on an error and knocking in two runs for a 9-5 lead. In all the Knights sent 16 men to the plate, scoring nine runs on four hits, drew three walks and were hit by a pitch once.

Elizabethtown scored a run in the seventh to make the final 9-6.

Michael Nessel who started the game and gave up five runs on nine hits, was the pitcher of record during the comeback and gets the victory. Petroski was 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Martin was 3-4 with two runs scored and RBI. Arsenault was the only other Knight to record a hit in the contest. He also had two RBI.

The Knights have taken the first two games of this three game series and will play third game later this afternoon.
