Baseball Drops 9-2 Decision to Lebanon Valley

Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Arcadia University baseball team dropped a 9-2 Commonwealth Conference contest to visiting Lebanon Valley College Thursday afternoon at Erny Field. The Knights fall to 5-21-1 overall and 3-13 in Commonwealth Conference contests with the loss, while Lebanon Valley improves to 18-12 overall and 9-7 in conference games with the win.

Arcadia bats were held fairly silent, being held to only four hits in the nine inning contest, although putting up the first run in the ballgame in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Tom Wagner (Somerdale, N.J.) led off the game with a hit-by-pitch and was later able to score after the shortstop could not handle a groundball by senior David Jacobs (Havre de Grace, Md.) that would have ended the inning.

The Dutchmen however, responded right back and took the lead in the very next half inning after two one-run singles gave them a 2-1 advantage.

Both offenses went quiet until Lebanon Valley tacked on three more runs in the fifth, which would be all that they would need. The Knights had a defensive lapse on a bunt and then another errant throw in the next at-bat allowed a run to score and then two consecutive RBI-groundouts made it a 5-1 game in favor of the Dutchmen.

Arcadia did respond in the bottom half of the fifth to cut the deficit to three after sophomore George Pagan (Old Bridge, N.J.) grounded out to plate classmate Michael Nessel (Stuart, Fla.).

Lebanon Valley added two more in the sixth after a passed ball put two in scoring position and a single to left pushed across both runners. The Dutchmen proceeded to tack on a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings to make the final score 9-2 after the Knights could not mount a comeback.

Sophomore starter Joseph Warren (Yardley, Pa.) took the loss for Arcadia, to drop to 1-2, after giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks in five innings of work. Senior Robert Worrell (West Chester, Pa.) tossed an inning of relief, allowing one unearned run on one hit and a walk while junior Kyle Farnholtz (Northampton, Pa.) finished off the final three innings, allowing two runs on four hits, and recording the staff's only strikeout of the game.

For Lebanon Valley, freshman Michael Houseal (Mt. Joy, Pa.) struck out seven in the complete game victory, and gave up two runs (one earned) on just four hits and three walks.

The Knights will look to avenge the loss when they travel to Lebanon Valley on Friday for a 12 p.m. conference doubleheader to finish off the season series.
